The airport, which was a product of the joint initiative of Savonlinna City and the municipality of Sääminki, was inaugurated officialy in 1974. SVL Airport is the least busy airport in Finland except during the annual Opera Festival, which is held around June. Relatively a quiet airport, SVL has been reported to handle 12,409 passengers in 2017.
