The airport was established in 1941 on the purchased and undeveloped 1,200 acres land by San Antonio City for the San Antonio Municipal Airport Project but the construction was stop because of the World War II. In 1942, the airport opened as Alamo Field and was used as the training base of United States Army Air Forces. With its major development in 1950 to 1975 such as new terminals, parking area expansion and control tower, the airport has become equipped to cater domestic and international flights. As of today, the airport is planning to add another terminal with 11 more gates targeting to start this 2020.
