Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre, Mount Bruce, New Zealand

Serving as a captive breeding headquarters, the Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre is found within Mount Bruce, New Zealand in the district of Tararua. This sanctuary, which is almost 950 hectares in area, serves as the natural habitat for wild kōkako and kākā. There are also endangered bird species bred in the facility and eventually released into the wild. Visitors coming to the area will be introduced to the conservation works of the wildlife center and be brought to see the birds housed in the aviaries.  

Although the wildlife center is located in Mount Bruce, you can also check out the dozens of accommodations readily available in the neighboring town of Masterton. One of the closest ones is the Amble Inn Motel – Masterton, sitting roughly 14 miles away from Mount Bruce. This is an excellent hotel option for traveling families as its guestrooms are spacious enough for a large group. Guests can also find a seasonal outdoor pool in the property, along with a picnic area and barbecue grills. For a more luxurious stay within the city, you can stay at Asure Colonial Court Motel & Conference Centre. This four-star motel also has a picnic and garden area, on top of its upscale en-suite amenities. When visiting Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre, you should also drop by the other attractions in the area, including the Queen Elizabeth Park. This family park comes with a miniature train, a pedal boat, and mini golf to entertain both adults and kids. The Vintage Aviator Museum is another must-see site if you are into history and aircraft.
