Whitsunday Coast Airport – PPP Gunyarra
Whitsunday Coast Airport, Gunyarra, Australia (PPP) or Prosperpine Airport is a public airport owned and operated by Whitsunday Regional Council. In the 12 months ending June 2014, it handled 282,000 passengers. By 2035, the airport is expected to handle more than 900,000 passengers annually.
Best Time to Visit
As early as 1936, there have been plans to build Whitsunday Coast Airport. However, construction did not commence until 1950 due to lack of funding. It officially opened its doors in 1951. In 2001, it suffered from the collapse of Ansett Australia, which was its biggest operator. Ansett Australia had direct flights to Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. In 2010, the airport had an upgrade. The following year, the new terminal officially opened. Whitsunday Coast Airport has two (2) runways measuring 6,801-foot long and 3,608-foot long, respectively. Jetstar Airways, Tigerair Australia, and Virgin Australia are the only commercial airlines operating at the airport. All these airlines have regular flights to Brisbane. Jetstar Airways also has routes to Melbourne and Sydney. Some of the best destinations near the airport include Midge Point, Shute Harbour, and Wilsons Beach.
