Officially opened in October 2010 and named after the Apollo 13 astronaut, the James Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, Illinois is the country’s first-ever federal health care center, which is partnered with both the US Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs. It was the result of the merging of the Naval Health Clinic Great Lakes (NHCGL) and North Chicago VA Medical Center (VAMC). Having an affiliation with the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, the James Lovell Federal Health Care Center provides medical care not only to active-duty military members, but also to their families, to military veterans, and even TRICARE-eligible retirees.
